There is an art world writ-large, all-of-it-all, but no one is talking about that really, they are usually talking derogatorily about 'The Art World', that shadowy sphere of capitalism amok under the guise of culture. But there are multiple art worlds, small local scenes, crafting communities on reddit, community-centric project spaces, mega-galleries, the disparate couple hundred galleries Et al. considers its aspirational peers. But the line between these is fuzzy, with artists navigating curators and gallerists and collectors to display/sell their work, with the artists themselves sometimes wearing one or all of those hats.

Likewise, who we are maybe could fall squarely into a single category, but rarely is this the case. We are artists, but also (pet and small human) parents, gamers, painters, writers, drinkers, readers, friends, supporters of social causes, home chefs. We have day jobs maybe, or more than one.

It struck us that among those folks we knew as artists or art-world adjacent, a number had become surfers. And, of course, the opposite is true: there are plenty of surfers that make art.

SURF is an expression of those duel energies. Neither fully an exhibition nor a shop, SURF represents a necessarily incomplete snapshot of the making habits of the local surf community.
